Chronicles from the North PART 3

Welcome back to Chronicles from the North, where we take a deeper look at the Northern Wind campaign. Today, we’re focusing on one of the key mechanics that sets Northern Wind apart—the Weak Point system.

WHAT ARE WEAK POINTS?

Weak Points (or WP) don’t represent direct damage but rather openings to be exploited in future actions—things like an opponent being on the back foot, a damaged piece of armor, a sprained wrist, or lost balance. These aren’t gaping wounds, but subtle disadvantages – weaknesses – that a skilled warrior can turn to their advantage.

HOW DO YOU GENERATE WEAK POINTS?

Weak Points come into play whenever a model makes a Damage Roll and fails to score a Wound. Instead of simply missing, the attacker places a Weak Point on their opponent. This applies to both heroes and Hostiles, meaning that as the battle progresses, more opportunities to exploit Weak Points arise.

However, heroes have an additional way to generate Weak Points. If a hero rolls lower than their Attack stat and doesn’t get to roll for Damage—either because they lost a Confrontation or because the Hostile successfully Dodged—they still place a Weak Point on their opponent. This ensures that the game keeps moving forward even when Attacks don’t immediately land.

EXPLOITING WEAK POINTS

So, you’ve stacked up Weak Points on the enemy—what now? You exploit them!

To do so, a hero needs to attack a Hostile and remove a number of Points equal to the Hostile’s Tier. Once spent, the hero can choose between two powerful effects:

  1. Convert a Strike into an automatic Critical. No need to rely on luck—Weak Points let you guarantee devastating Hits!
  2. Kick the enemy off a cliff. If the Hostile is standing near a ledge or another environmental hazard, you can instantly eliminate them. However, be warned—any Loot they were carrying will be lost along with them!

WEAK POINTS ON HEROES

But Weak Points aren’t just for enemies—heroes can accumulate them too. Unlike Hostiles, Weak Points on heroes are slow to clear. Most standard enemies aren’t skilled enough to exploit them, but Boss-type Hostiles are a different story. Each Boss has a unique way of exploiting Weak Points that fits their theme and playstyle, meaning you’ll need to stay sharp and plan ahead when facing them!

WEAK POINTS ON HEROES

The Weak Point system ensures that every action has an impact—even failed attacks help set up future plays. Instead of simply swinging and missing, you’ll constantly be looking for ways to weaken your enemies and set up game-changing finishing moves.

That’s all for this week! Next time, we’ll return to our hero introductions and take a look at Anari, the Prodigy—master of both fire and ice!
