CHRONICLES OF TACTICA XIII ACADEMY EXPEDITIONER

Welcome back to Chronicles of Tactica, where we dive into individual models from the Eldfall Chronicles range and explore their tactical use on the wargaming tabletop. This time we’re taking a look at the Academy Expeditioner—the Sand Kingdoms’ finest ranged option. Read the lore here.
PROFILE CHARACTERISTICS & PLAYSTYLE
At 18 points, the Academy Expeditioner falls into the higher-end range for non-Stratagem models. With a limit of 2 per list, you can bring a pair to double down on their strengths. For Classes, the Expeditioner offers the Mage Class for occasional rerolls, but the real highlight is the Sorcerer Class, which grants rerolls on every Sorcery Spell—and as you’ll see, the Expeditioner’s Spell arsenal is all about Sorcery.
Looking at its stats, there are some nonstandard numbers for a Sand Kingdoms model. While OFF, DEF, and ACC are as low as expected, this model boasts a respectable INT of 14, along with ARM 4 and HP 2. Soga players may scoff, but in Sand Kingdoms terms, this is practically tanky!
Skills and Traits offer a touch of utility, with Survival (Scorching) making the model adaptable to more varied terrain. But the true power of the Academy Expeditioner lies, as with most Sand Kingdom models, in its Spell arsenal. With Sorcery Level 3 and Elder Affinity, it has access to three highly aggressive Spells. First up is Arcane Bolt, a straightforward STK 2 ranged attack that’s surprisingly deadly with its high PW (equal to INT). The second Spell, Telekinetic Blast, covers a large area with its Spray template, offering crowd control with Knockback 3 to create some breathing space. And finally, the Expeditioner’s finisher is Soul Crush, a potent Attack that ignores Armor, stuns, and can inflict Panicked. While it’s STK 1, the effects make it a solid finisher.
Altogether, the Expeditioner model’s role is clear: it’s a heavy turret, a resilient shooter that controls the field and keeps enemy models in check. Its durability helps it fulfill this role by absorbing a few hits before going down, allowing it to serve as a gatekeeper to the often fragile models typical of the Sand Kingdoms.
TOP UPGRADES
- Casting Amplifier,
- Additional Protection,
- Elemental Lineage.
Casting Amplifier is essential for the Academy Expeditioner. Ranged Attacks are the model’s main function, and it’s challenging to operate effectively when every bowman outranges you. For two points, you may still be outdistanced, but this Upgrade forces bowmen to either take a range penalty or allow the Expeditioner to shoot back. Additional Protection is also ideal for this model, as AG is irrelevant if you’re rarely dodging—what matters is that ARM boost. Finally, Elemental Lineage is a solid pick for one simple reason: Fireball.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
The Academy Expeditioner is your main brawler for Sand Kingdoms, providing some much-needed resilience backed by a powerful set of offensive Spells. The model’s role may not be the most glamorous, but it excels at protecting your more delicate units by projecting a threat your opponent can’t ignore. And if your Expeditioner’s life buys enough time for your Vizier to bring in a Colossus, then it didn’t sacrifice itself in vain!
