CHRONICLES OF TACTICA XVIII MUSHA BOWMASTER
Welcome back to Chronicles of Tactica, where we dive into individual models from the Eldfall Chronicles range and explore how to make the most of them on the tabletop. Last week, with the Faris Outrider, we finally wrapped up the models from the Starter Boxes. Today, we’re moving swiftly into the first-ever expansion for Eldfall Chronicles, the Reinforcements Pack: Wayfarers. And who better to start with than the ranged terror himself—the Musha Bowmaster?
PROFILE CHARACTERISTICS & PLAYSTYLE
At 17 points and with a limit of 2 per list, the Musha Bowmaster is a reasonably priced model that can be fielded in pairs—something your opponents should fear, as we’ll soon see. The Bowmaster comes with the Warrior Class, offering flexibility between Active and Reactive turns, and the Marksman Class, which improves your bow Attacks if you remain stationary. Unsurprisingly, the Musha Bowmaster excels at, well… shooting a bow. Cue the shocked Pikachu face.
When it comes to stats, the Bowmaster embodies classic Soga balance—averaging out in most areas but excelling where it counts. ACC 14 stands out as particularly high, while ARM 2 is surprisingly low for Soga, leaving the model a bit squishier than others. Overall, the Bowmaster is a solid all-rounder model that can hold its own in melee when necessary.
Its Skills and Traits further reinforce the model’s versatility. Resourceful I, you know it, you love it, extra Upgrades are always great. The real spice, however, comes from Duelist, which disables the Combat Arts of melee opponents with LVL III or lower. Combine this with Fencing I, and the Bowmaster becomes surprisingly effective in melee combat. But the star here is Archery III. This delightful package has it all; it extends your RCH, slows your opponents, and—best of all—adds Stagger to your ranged attacks.
The model’s Inventory is equally impressive. For close-quarters, the Bowmaster carries a Sword and a Dagger, both serviceable options. But the real showstopper is the Bow. With a short range of 24” and a long range of 48”, the Bow can essentially hit anything on a standard 36” tabletop. Add a PW of T+3 (equating to 16 PW in the Bowmaster’s hands), and you have a devastating Ranged Weapon. However, this power comes at a cost, as the STK is STA-1, meaning the Bowmaster can’t fire as rapidly as some other ranged models (unless…).
On the battlefield, the Musha Bowmaster excels at zone and movement denial. Its incredible range allows it to sit comfortably on a vantage point and threaten two Staggering arrows per turn. Stagger is crucial in this role, as losing AP (Activation Points) on a hit can cripple enemy models. And while the Bowmaster is exceptional at controlling space from a distance, it’s also no slouch up close. Closing the gap to dispatch enemies with its sword is a perfectly viable strategy, particularly when fighting over objectives.Resourceful I, you know it, you love it, extra upgrades are great.
TOP UPGRADES
- Kassen Buki: Daikyuu-tsukai
The War Bow Upgrade increases your PW by 1 and adds permanent Stagger to your Attacks. At just 2 points, it’s a highly appealing choice that enhances your ranged dominance. - Kyujutsu Expertise
This Upgrade grants Archery IV, giving you +1 STK when firing your bow, turning the Bowmaster into a rapid-fire menace. It’s particularly deadly when combined with the War Bow. - Bujutsu Expertise
For those looking to lean into the Bowmaster’s melee capabilities, this upgrade opens up more combat options, making it a true hybrid threat.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
The Musha Bowmaster is a textbook example of Soga’s field control capabilities. Unlike other Soga models that dominate through aggressive field advancement, the Bowmaster excels by holding back or advancing slowly, covering the battlefield with precise, devastating ranged attacks. Fielding two Bowmasters will leave your opponents hugging cover for dear life all game. While they are softer than some other Soga fighters, their ranged power and versatility make them an essential component of any Soga list. They are the ultimate ranged control piece, capable of anchoring your strategy and punishing opponents who dare to step into their Line of Sight.
