CHRONICLES OF TACTICA 23 Spelldancer Aerothurge

Welcome back to Chronicles of Tactica, where we explore individual models from the Eldfall Chronicles range and learn how to maximize their effectiveness on the tabletop. Today, we’re taking a look at the support-focused sister of the Voidcaster—the Spelldancer Aerothurge!

PROFILE CHARACTERISTICS & PLAYSTYLE

The Aerothurge is priced at 17 points with a limit of 2, making her an affordable backline support piece. She comes with the Mage class, primarily for spellcasting rerolls, and the highly potent Enchanter class, ensuring she automatically succeeds when applying her many powerful Enchantments.

Like the Voidcaster, Aerothurge’s stat line is underwhelming, even for Sand Kingdoms standards. Her INT 12 is below average, but she makes up for it with SPD 6 and AG 14, giving her excellent mobility and some survivability in the reactive turn. She also comes with Survival (Scorching) as standard, but more importantly, she has Charm I, which makes reactions against her riskier for opponents, and Affinity (Elder, Air), granting access to an impressive selection of Enchantment spells.

Aerothurge has no inventory, but her spell list more than compensates. She has Electromancy I, which gives access to Electrification, a short-range but deadly spell that can be used as a last resort or in niche situations to take advantage of the Ricochet rule. However, the real reason you bring Aerothurge is Art of Enchanting III. On the Elder side, she has Arcane Shield to improve survivability, Spectral Edge to grant Ignore Armor and Stagger, and Haste for additional movement in the Strategic Phase—all well-known and incredibly useful spells. But her real uniqueness comes from her Air Enchantments. Formless Edge increases a model’s RCH by 2 and adds Knockback, offering great control over space. Featherlight boosts SPD by 2, an incredible mobility buff that stacks well with Haste or even a Flying Carpet. Finally, Protective Currents is a defensive buff that also increases the chance of dealing damage due to how confrontation works, making it an excellent tool for mitigating incoming attacks.

All of these spells make Aerothurge an incredible toolbox support model, constantly adjusting to the needs of the battle. Most of her turns will be spent moving behind her frontline and applying two Enchantments to optimize her allies’ performance. She won’t be winning fights herself, but she’ll make sure her teammates do. Because of this, she needs to be paired with proactive pieces that can fully utilize her buffs. A well-buffed Onitaoshi can become an unstoppable sweeping force, Gargoyles with Protective Currents can crash through enemy gunlines with impunity, and a kitted-out Faris can become even harder to pin down. Aerothurge ensures that whatever your opponent throws at you, you have the right Enchantment to counter it. However, she is incredibly fragile and relies entirely on positioning to survive, making careful play essential.

TOP UPGRADES

  • First Aid: A fragile backline model with high Awareness? You already know the drill.
  • Casting Amplifier: If you want her to play further back and give Electrification a real threat range, this is a solid option.
  • Imported Crossbow: If you take Spectral Edge, this lets her contribute in the reactive turn and become a sneaky board control pieceHowever, this is expensive, and she’s still a very soft target.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Spelldancer Aerothurge is the ultimate pure support model. She has no offensive capabilities herself, but her Enchantment selection is wider than most entire lists. Paired with the right models, she can dramatically enhance their effectiveness, adapting their strengths to any given situation. Whether it’s extending Onitaoshi’s range, making Gargoyles unkillable, or giving a model near-limitless movement, if there’s a problem on the battlefield, Aerothurge has an Enchantment to solve it.
