CHRONICLES OF TACTICA VI ONITAOSHi
Welcome back to Chronicles of Tactica, an article series where we take a closer look at individual models in the Eldfall Chronicles range and how to use them on the tabletop. Last week, we finished examining the basic leaders for the four factions. Today, we return to the Empire of Soga to explore the profile of Onitaoshi,Empire of Soga’s ogre-slayer, also available as a mercenary model to other faction parties.
PROFILE CHARACTERISTICS & PLAYSTYLE
Coming in at a hefty cost of 21 points, and as with previously examined models, she is limited to one per list. Onitaoshi is priced more like a leader than a regular foot soldier. However, even without Stratagems, it’s easy to see how Onitaoshi justifies this cost. The model features the Soga staple—the Warrior Class—allowing you to switch between aggressive and defensive play, and the Armsmaster Class, which boosts Onitaoshi’s offensive output. The stats exemplify classic Soga melee superiority, with an outstanding OFF 16 and SPD 6, further reinforcing the model’s aggressive role. Onitaoshi also boasts an ARM 6 and HP 3, making her the most resilient model in its base form in the game. To add a bit of utility, Onitaoshi comes with Taunt, which can disrupt your opponent’s defensive plans, and Finishing Strike, which piles on the damage. Pair this with the coveted Fencing Arts Level III for that extra +1 STK, and you have a powerhouse attack piece.
Onitaoshi’s aggressive playstyle is emphasized by her weapons. While the Short Sword offers flexibility when you need to roll more dice, the real star is the Greatsword, Ō-tachi. Though it has STK 1, Onitaoshi’s abilities more than compensate. The weapon’s true power lies not in its high PW of T+2, but in its RCH 2, paired with the Sweep I Trait. This combination allows Onitaoshi to lock down multiple opponents and threaten them all at once, engaging them and possibly leaving them out of RCH. As a bonus, the weapon also causes Bleed, which is perfect for dealing with multi-HP models that survive your Finishing Strike.
This entire package creates yet another mobile frontline tank for the Empire of Soga, perfectly complementing the Clan Champion in being able to rush the opposition. Moving forward in unison, Onitaoshi disrupts with her Taunt, while both models control large areas of the field with their RCH 2, forming a fearsome duo. The Clan Champion’s Stratagems also perfectly support Onitaoshi, giving her Dash or increasing her SPD to a staggering 7. Onitaoshi exemplifies the Soga playstyle—doing the same thing as the Clan Champion, but doing it exceptionally well, with the added safety of deep HP pools. Additionally, Onitaoshi is the first Mercenary model we’ve discussed, making her combat prowess available to any faction. She’s a great pick if you want access to Taunt and a boatload of HP!
TOP UPGRADES
- Lucky Charm,
- Additional Protection,
- Traveling Duelist,
- (Flying Carpet).
When it comes to upgrades, Lucky Charm is a standout choice, allowing you to force rerolls on your opponents’ Damage Rolls when they try to pierce your ARM—a wicked advantage! Given Onitaoshi’s already high ARM, doubling down on Defense with Additional Protection becomes an extremely powerful option. You sacrifice some AG, but it’s well worth it. Finally, when facing other models with RCH 2 and Combat Arts, Traveling Duelist shuts them down, swinging the fight in your favor every time. And we can’t overlook the honorable mention: the Sand Kingdoms’ Flying Carpet! Available to Onitaoshi only when taken in the Sand Kingdoms, it doubles her SPD and allows her to ignore terrain, turning her into a terrifying cruise missile.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
That’s all for Onitaoshi. We have yet another excellent area-controlling piece for Soga that is nearly impossible to shift. The trend for Soga is clear: fewer fancy skills or tricks, but plenty of hard heads and sharp sticks!
