Expatriates are Helrin who have violated the moral principles that form the bedrock of Helian society. As punishment, they are exiled from the cities—banished to the border colonies or forced to seek shelter beyond the walls of Helion.
Anyone may fall into this status. An elite noble entangled in scandalous affairs, or a peasant who brought shame upon their household—both may find themselves cast out. Expatriation is not merely social rejection; it is a test of worth and repentance.
Those who wish to redeem themselves must survive the wilds and prove their continued value to the League. They are charged with exploring uncharted lands, mapping terrain, reporting on new phenomena, and easing tensions with local tribes—particularly the more hostile Androtauri and *Hippomachi.
Occasionally, an expatriate may accomplish a deed of great importance in service to the Helian League, earning back their honor and the right to return. However, many choose otherwise. For some, freedom from the strictures of Helian order outweighs the promise of reinstatement. They forge new lives far from the gleaming cities, embracing their exile as a chance to begin again.
