The Kitsune are a subspecies of Chimera—a mystical race that walks the line between the humanoid and the beast-born, embodying aspects of both.
Though few in number, the Kitsune are an integral part of the Empire of Soga, having dwelled in the northern reaches of Calad long before the first humans set foot upon its soil. It is said they learned their ancient magic from the Old Gods themselves. While no written records survive from their pre-human era, the Kitsune have passed down their wisdom through unbroken lines of oral tradition, from master to apprentice, for countless generations.
Where the monks of the Rishinkyō faith tend to the daily spiritual needs of the people, it is the Kitsune who stand vigil over the greater tides of fate. They serve as custodians of balance, performing rituals that appease the primordial spirits of the land—forces older and more powerful than gods. Though this sacred duty often places them at a distance from the common folk, one must remember: without their intercessions, the Empire—and perhaps the world—might suffer calamities beyond comprehension.
Among the Kitsune, the young initiates are known as Spellmaidens, easily recognized by their twin tails. These apprentices are traditionally assigned to serve under fully fledged Hon’ōtsukai—high shamans who chiefly wield fire. They learn through observance and participation, assisting in the ritual fox-dances of purification. These ceremonies are held under moonlight and starlight, accompanied by the sounds of ancient instruments and magical displays of ethereal flame and dancing spirits. So mesmerizing are these performances that they draw pilgrims and curious onlookers from across Calad and beyond.
Spellmaidens are often sent to accompany warrior clan expeditions, serving as wardens against arcane corruption and spiritual unrest. Such assignments are not only sacred tasks, but also vital training—where theory must yield to practice beneath the shadow of danger.
Like all Chimeras, the Kitsune possess the gift of shapeshifting and are known for their unnaturally long lifespans. Their power is often reflected in their physical form: the more tails a Kitsune bears, the greater their mastery of the arcane. The most revered among them is none other than the First Empress of the Empire, who, according to legend, bears nine tails—a living embodiment of Kitsune might and divine favor.
