Kitsune Spellmaiden

The Kitsune are a subspecies of Chimera, a mystical race straddling the boundary between the humanoid and beast-born, carrying traits of both.

Though few in number, the Kitsune are an essential pillar of the Empire of Soga. They inhabited the northern reaches of Calad long before the first human settlers arrived, and it is whispered that the Old Gods themselves taught them their ancient magic. No written records survive from the time before men, yet much of this knowledge endures through an unbroken oral tradition, passed from master to apprentice across countless generations.

Where the monks of the Rishinkyō faith tend to the daily spiritual needs of the people, the Kitsune stand vigil over the greater tides of fate. They are custodians of balance, performing rituals to appease the primordial spirits of the land, forces said to be older and more powerful than the gods themselves. This sacred duty often keeps them apart from the common folk. Yet without their intercession, the Empire, and perhaps the world beyond it, might suffer calamities beyond comprehension.

The youngest initiates among their kind are known as Spellmaidens, recognizable by their twin tails. These apprentices are traditionally placed in the care of a Hon’ōtsukai, a high shaman most often aligned with fire. Much of their education comes through ritual and observance. Spellmaidens assist in the fox-dances of purification, elaborate ceremonies performed beneath the moonlight as ethereal flames move in rhythm with sacred instruments and ancestral chants. Such rites are a rare spectacle, drawing pilgrims and curious onlookers from across Calad.

Though Kitsune are known to shun all things profane, the path of a Spellmaiden often leads directly into turmoil. Young initiates are regularly sent alongside warrior clans on expeditions, where they serve as wardens against arcane corruption and spiritual imbalance. For the Spellmaidens, these journeys are also trials through which their teachings are tested against the dangers of the wider world.

Like all Chimeras, Kitsune possess an innate gift for shapeshifting and live far beyond the span of ordinary mortals. Their arcane prowess is reflected in their form, with the number of tails they bear said to mirror their mastery of magic. None is more exalted than the First Empress of the Empire herself. Bearing nine tails, she represents the very height of Kitsune power and stands as a living link to their ancient heritage.
